Our firm is attentive in advising clients of the kind of glass best suited for their specific requirements and especially in choosing:
heat insulation – noise abatement – light transmission – solar factor – solar radiation – light reflection etc. Also important are any situations of risk there may be, and where the client may find themselves if they have not chosen the kind of glass properly, and then propose as required: accident prevention glass – burglary proof glass – crime prevention glass – bullet proof glass etc. and after having looked at al these situations it is still possible to run into the risk of spontaneous breakage of the glass due to “Thermal Shock”.
What is “thermal shock”?
Thermal shock = Thermal shock (spontaneous breaking of annealed glass) happens where there are certain situations of climate and/or environment (exposure to the sun, porticos, etc.) and where there are factors that can modify the energy properties of the glass (curtains, sun screens, adhesives, advertising posters, furniture, lowered false ceilings etc,). “Thermal Shock” occurs when the there are present in the sheet of glass two different temperatures: one high, caused by direct radiation from the sun or forced heating and one cold, caused by areas of shading or forced cooling. When these stresses exceed a certain critical value for the glass they cause it to break.
We therefore always advise insuring sheets of glass against breakage in general after they have been installed.
BRIEFING CONCERNING CLEARING OF GLASS IN PLACE
It is recommended that what is well known and we repeat here be scrupulously followed.
- do not use products that can ruin the glass sheets when trying to clean them.
- do not use abrasive or similar products for glazed surfaces (e.g. shop windows, doors windows…).
- do not use alcohol or the like to clean the edges of stratified and/or armoured sheets (e.g.: balconies, stairs, tables…)
- do not use acids or their derivates, solvents and their derivates, petroleum and its derivates to clean glass with external and/or internal sealing in silicone.
